Matteo Formichetti in the Stefano Cau Timeless Men’s Style Interview

When it comes to men’s style, few express elegance with the quiet confidence and precision of Matteo Formichetti. Known for his impeccable taste and sharp sense of refinement, Formichetti lives and breathes sartorial culture. His vision aligns naturally with Stefano Cau, whose Como-based brand sets the standard for Italian craftsmanship and silk accessories.

In the world of men’s fashion, sartorial elegance is more than just a clothing choice, it’s an art form, a reflection of personal style, and a tribute to the details that define true craftsmanship.
This exclusive conversation marks the launch of the Stefano Cau timeless men’s style interview series, an ongoing exploration of what it means to dress with intention and character.

What’s one essential piece every man should have in his wardrobe?

I never go without a gray flannel pinstripe suit. It’s timeless and always works.

How do you choose the perfect tie to complete a look? Do you have a favorite fabric or pattern?

In winter, I usually go for dark madder silk with small patterns. In summer, I prefer lighter silk with bolder prints, and I often add regimental stripes to the mix.

What makes a tie truly special in your opinion?

Craftsmanship and quality come first. But the right pairing, with a suit or separates, truly elevates the tie.

What sparked your passion for menswear? Was there a specific garment or moment?

I fell in love with style at 14, when I discovered Levi’s denim. I even wore them in white. From there, I moved on to leather and suede jackets, then embraced navy blazers and full suits by the time I was 24 or 25, right when Agnelli’s style was at its peak.

Who inspires your style the most? Is there an icon you particularly admire?

Gianni Agnelli always inspired me. His elegance never felt forced, it just flowed naturally.

What advice would you give someone starting to build a sartorial wardrobe?

Start with a good tailor who can introduce you to fabrics. Begin with a medium-gray single-breasted suit and add a navy blazer, it’s the perfect base.

What sets Italian elegance apart from other sartorial traditions?

Italian tailoring thrives on craftsmanship. While few tailors still work with true passion, our tradition keeps that spirit alive. Italy built a legacy of sartorial excellence that the world still recognizes.

How important are accessories like ties, cufflinks, and pocket squares in completing a look?

They matter, especially the tie. When the tie matches the outfit in tone and style, it brings everything together.

Can you recall an occasion when you felt especially well dressed? What did you wear?

At my daughter’s wedding, I wore a deep navy double-breasted suit in a silk-cotton-wool blend. It felt exceptional, truly the right choice for the day.

Where do you see classic menswear heading? Which trends will stand out in the next few years?

Today’s lifestyle favors comfort and quick solutions, which makes classic tailoring more rare. But elegance always finds its place. A well-cut suit, a crisp shirt, and a tie never go out of style, they remain the core of true elegance.

Matteo Formichetti reminds us that true style isn’t about trends, it’s about consistency, character, and knowing who you are. His perspective reflects a quiet confidence that elevates every detail, from the choice of fabric to the knot of a tie.

The Elegance of the Made-in-Italy Tie

Christmas is a season for family gatherings, but as Stefano Cau reminds us, it’s also a time when elegance shines at its brightest. In the past, dressing up for the holidays was more than a tradition; it was an expression of respect for oneself and others. Among these traditions, the tie—especially a handcrafted silk tie with intricate holiday patterns—was an essential accessory for anyone wanting to stand out. Families would gather for Christmas Eve dressed elegantly, often wearing ties in festive colors and patterns. Greens, reds, and blues were the stars of the season, and the tie was never a mere detail but a statement of style and belonging, valued by those who appreciated quality craftsmanship. It’s no wonder that one of the most popular Christmas gifts for men was a tie—a gift of elegance, embodying a thoughtful, refined gesture. It was not just an accessory but a promise of style, adding a touch of class to the wearer without a word. The bespoke silk tie became a symbol not only of sophistication but also of love and attention to detail.
